Tottenham Hotspur are exploring the possibility of appointing one of their current players as interim manager for the remainder of the season following the departure of Igor Tudor.
The club confirmed Tudor’s exit in a statement released on Sunday afternoon, ending his brief and turbulent 44-day spell in charge.
The Croatian failed to secure a victory in any of his five Premier League matches after replacing Thomas Frank, leaving Spurs sitting 17th in the table — just one point above the relegation zone — with seven games left to play. A heavy 3-0 loss to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest ultimately proved to be his final match in charge.
Focus will now shift to appointing a third manager in hopes of preventing the club from dropping into the second tier for the first time since 1977. Reports indicate that Harry Redknapp, Tim Sherwood, Chris Hughton, and Glenn Hoddle are all being considered as short-term options, each having previously played for or managed the North London side.
Interestingly, current defender Ben Davies has also emerged as a potential candidate. Davies, who joined Spurs from Swansea City in 2014, is the club’s longest-serving player. The 32-year-old has been sidelined since January after undergoing surgery for a fractured ankle, an injury that also ruled him out of Wales’ World Cup play-off defeat to Bosnia on Thursday.
Appointing Davies would represent a bold decision, especially with Spurs having a gap before their next fixture. The team is not scheduled to return to action until April 12, when they travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland.
Looking further ahead, if Tottenham successfully avoid relegation, Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly interested in taking the role on a permanent basis. The former Brighton manager recently left Marseille, while ex-Spurs striker Robbie Keane is believed to be open to leaving Hungarian club Ferencvaros only if he is offered the position full-time. Meanwhile, Sean Dyche remains available after his recent dismissal from Nottingham Forest.
