Stats highlight Igor Tudor’s biggest mistake at Tottenham involving Richarlison

Alasdair Gold has admitted he is worried about how Tottenham Hotspur are managing the development of young midfielder Archie Gray during the club’s fight to avoid relegation.

After an impressive breakthrough campaign at Leeds United in the 2023–24 season, Gray joined Spurs in a £40 million deal on a six-year contract. In his debut year in North London, the teenager made 46 appearances and played a role in the club’s UEFA Europa League triumph.

Now 19, Gray has continued to feature regularly this season, making 28 appearances while being deployed in several different positions. Rather than settling into his natural central midfield role, he has been used across the pitch — particularly in defence — turning him into something of a “utility player” for Spurs.

Gold praised Gray’s ability and maturity but questioned whether the club’s approach could harm his long-term development. The England youth international has played 20 games at centre-back, 17 as a defensive midfielder, 11 at right-back, 10 in central midfield, seven at left-back and three on the right side of midfield.

In the current Premier League season, Gray has logged 1,203 minutes, scoring two goals and providing two assists while completing 83.8% of his passes across 19 appearances.

According to Gold, a player with Gray’s talent would typically be carefully developed in his preferred position at most clubs. However, Tottenham’s injury problems have forced him to fill gaps all over the pitch.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold said a bit of positional variety can help a young player grow, but spending crucial early seasons away from their natural role could potentially slow their progress.

A similar situation has been seen with fellow young midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who joined Spurs from Djurgårdens IF for around £8.5 million. Bergvall has also been used in several roles across midfield and attack during his 71 appearances before suffering an injury earlier this year.

While both youngsters have been deployed in multiple positions, Bergvall has not been used in defence, unlike Gray, who has spent most of his time at centre-back.

Despite the positional changes, Gray has quickly become a favourite among Spurs supporters thanks to his commitment and versatility. Fans will be hoping he can help the team secure survival in the Premier League — and that next season brings a clearer development plan for one of the club’s brightest young talents.
