Thomas Frank Ridiculed for Cristian Romero Comments Following Man United Loss

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has come under intense fire after his post-match comments following Spurs’ 2–0 defeat to Manchester United went viral, with many branding them “sack-worthy.” The North London club remain without a Premier League win in 2026 and have now extended their winless run to seven consecutive league matches.

The contest was evenly contested during the opening 30 minutes, but Cristian Romero’s torrid week worsened when he was shown a red card for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Casemiro. United quickly took advantage, with Bryan Mbeumo breaking the deadlock nine minutes later before Bruno Fernandes wrapped up the victory with an 80th-minute finish.

That defeat has left Spurs languishing in 14th place, just three points above Nottingham Forest in 17th — the same position they ended last season under Ange Postecoglou. More worryingly, they now sit only six points clear of the relegation zone.

Frank’s Romero Remarks Trigger Backlash

Romero’s reputation for indiscipline is well established among Premier League supporters, making Frank’s defence of the centre-back all the more baffling. The Spurs boss claimed the Argentine had not been shown an excessive number of red cards, portraying him instead as a highly emotional, aggressive defender who plays on the edge.

However, Frank appeared taken aback when a reporter pointed out that Romero has been sent off more times than any other Tottenham player in the club’s Premier League history, admitting he was unaware of the statistic.

The latest dismissal is Romero’s second red card of the season, earning him a four-match ban rather than the usual three. By the time he returns, he will have missed nine games this campaign, including absences due to yellow-card suspensions. He now has five Premier League red cards, leaving him one short of joining the league’s most frequently dismissed players.

Pressure Intensifies on Frank

Spurs’ alarming dip in form, coupled with poor results and growing unrest among fans, players, and the club’s hierarchy, has deepened the crisis surrounding Frank. With each passing week, confidence in his ability to steady the ship is fading, and his exit is beginning to feel increasingly unavoidable.

Supporters were scathing in their reaction online. Some labelled his comments “sackable,” with others predicting he would be dismissed before the upcoming Arsenal clash. Fans also questioned how a manager could be unaware of his captain’s disciplinary record, branding the situation “clueless” and “embarrassing.”

Talk of potential replacements is already gathering pace, especially after Tottenham failed to reinforce their squad during the January transfer window — despite suffering 12 injuries to outfield players — further fuelling frustration and piling pressure on the under-fire head coach.
