“Too Much Corruption” – Mané Responds to Controversial AFCON Title Decision

A major controversy in African football has sparked a powerful reaction from former Liverpool star Sadio Mané, who has spoken out after Senegal were stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations title.

The ex-Liverpool forward, instrumental in many successes during his time at Anfield, publicly criticised the decision to overturn the result of the AFCON final, expressing deep frustration over the situation.

Senegal were originally crowned champions following a dramatic victory against Morocco. However, the result was later reversed after an appeal, triggering widespread debate and criticism across the football community.

Taking to Instagram, Mané did not hide his disappointment with how events unfolded.

The Senegal international wrote: “What happened has gone too far. This is not the football we fight for, not the Africa we believe in.”

The former No.10 made it clear that his concerns go beyond simply losing the title.

He continued: “There is too much corruption in our game, and it’s killing the passion of millions of fans across the continent.” ⚽

Mané urges reform in African football

Mané’s remarks reflect growing frustration among players and supporters who believe that off-field decisions are having an increasing influence on major tournaments.

Now 33, the winger—who played a central role in Senegal’s rise on the continental stage—suggested that the integrity of the sport is being undermined.

He added: “Players give everything on the pitch, but decisions off it are deciding matches and trophies.”

The former Liverpool star also stressed that the issue extends far beyond one team or one final.

Mané said: “I’m deeply disappointed not just for Senegal, but for African football as a whole.”

Liverpool legend’s voice carries significant influence

For Liverpool fans, Mané’s comments resonate strongly given his leadership and reputation during high-pressure moments.

After Senegal reached the AFCON final, he had previously shown humility when speaking about Mohamed Salah following their victory over Egypt, acknowledging the effort his former teammate had made throughout the tournament.

That sportsmanship stood in sharp contrast to the controversy that later surrounded the final itself.

As Mané and Senegal celebrated what appeared to be their second AFCON triumph in five years after defeating hosts Morocco, the forward even recreated Jordan Henderson’s famous trophy-lift celebration—an emotional moment that connected with many supporters. 🏆

However, the decision to overturn the result has now overshadowed those celebrations and reignited concerns about governance in African football.

Mané concluded his statement with a firm call for accountability:

“We deserve better. The fans deserve fairness, transparency, and respect.”
