Thomas Frank is facing intense scrutiny and could be dismissed after the recent draw, even though Spurs managed to secure a positive Champions League result against Borussia Dortmund in midweek.
The Lewis family are keen to restore Tottenham’s competitiveness, and removing the Dane could be their first major step. In the meantime, the club appears to be preparing for a post-Frank era, with Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni emerging as a prime target.
Former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, who has been linked with the Tottenham job following his exit from the Bernabéu, previously relied heavily on Tchouaméni despite an underwhelming spell in Spain. The French midfielder, a Champions League winner with 174 appearances for Madrid and 43 international caps, impressed during Alonso’s tenure.
According to Fichajes, Tottenham and Liverpool have both submitted proposals worth around £85 million for Tchouaméni. Spurs are said to have carried out extensive scouting on the 25-year-old, with Real Madrid now internally reviewing the bids.
Tchouaméni is viewed as a ready-made midfield leader who could make an instant impact in north London, having once again showcased his quality in La Liga this season. Should Alonso arrive at Spurs before the transfer window closes, a reunion with his former player is seen as a real possibility.
However, the move would significantly dent Tottenham’s finances. With a £150 million transfer budget, the club has already spent £35 million on Conor Gallagher and £13 million on Souza, while a potential £3 million deal for Andrew Robertson has also been mentioned. Adding Tchouaméni would leave Spurs with just £14 million remaining.
It would be a bold outlay by the Lewis family amid uncertainty over Frank’s future, but such investment could make the Tottenham job far more attractive to any incoming manager.
