Tottenham Hotspur announce their second signing of the January window after finalising a £35m deal

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Brennan Johnson’s exit, with the 24-year-old attacker completing a club-record move to Crystal Palace. Johnson joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in September 2023 for £47.5m and departs after just over a year in north London.

During his time at Tottenham, Johnson made 106 appearances, scoring 27 goals and registering 18 assists. He was part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Europa League in May 2025, memorably scoring from close range in the final at San Mamés.

Under Ange Postecoglou, the Welsh international was an important figure and consistently delivered, recording at least 15 goal contributions in each of his last two Premier League seasons.

However, his role diminished following Thomas Frank’s arrival. Despite featuring 22 times under the Dane, Johnson clocked only around 900 minutes, with Frank favouring Mohammed Kudus, who arrived from West Ham in July 2025 for an initial £50m.
football.london reports that Johnson was told on New Year’s Eve that he was no longer central to Tottenham’s plans.

While several Premier League clubs, including Bournemouth, Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United, showed interest, Crystal Palace moved quickly to secure his signing.

Palace are understood to have paid £35m for Johnson. Chairman Steve Parish hailed him as an “exciting young talent,” praising his strong record at club and international level and expressing confidence that Selhurst Park is the ideal environment for him to continue his development. Parish added that Johnson’s arrival significantly strengthens Palace’s attacking options during a demanding season that includes European competition for the first time.

Head coach Oliver Glasner also welcomed the signing, highlighting Johnson’s pace and goalscoring threat and noting the importance of adding depth ahead of a busy run of fixtures.
Johnson himself expressed his delight, saying he is thrilled to join a club he has long admired and eager to be part of Palace’s ongoing project.

The former Spurs winger has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract, will wear the number 11 shirt, and is available for selection for Sunday’s match against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Prior to the official announcement, Thomas Frank addressed Johnson’s situation in general terms, explaining that transfer decisions often involve players who want to leave, those who are undecided, and those who wish to stay, with clubs aiming to find solutions that satisfy all parties involved.
