Tottenham in Crisis as Igor Tudor Departs and Relegation Battle Looms

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Sunday evening that Igor Tudor has left the club, while goalkeeping coach Tomislav Rogic and fitness coach Riccardo Ragnacci have also exited as part of a wider restructuring of the coaching staff.

Tudor’s brief spell in charge is already being regarded as one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s recent history. The Croatian was appointed in February after the dismissal of Thomas Frank, with the task of steadying a team that had been struggling for consistency. However, performances failed to improve. He managed just one victory in seven matches—a 3-2 win against Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League—yet Spurs were still eliminated from the competition after losing 7-5 on aggregate.

Off the field, the separation between Tudor and the club appears to have been handled amicably. Reports from Alex Crook suggest that Tudor agreed to leave without requesting compensation, effectively giving up his severance package. This move indicates a mutual acceptance that the appointment had not succeeded, sparing the club from what is often a complicated and expensive managerial payout.

On the pitch, the statistics highlight the team’s struggles. Tottenham failed to secure a win in any of their five Premier League matches under Tudor, earning just a single point from a draw against Liverpool. Their defensive record was particularly alarming, conceding 20 goals across all competitions during his short tenure—one of the poorest defensive runs in the league over that period.

Away from football, personal circumstances also affected the situation. Reports indicate that Tudor received news of the passing of his father, Mario Tudor, shortly after the heavy 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on March 22. The club publicly expressed its condolences and support. Combined with growing fan frustration and a tense atmosphere following that loss, these factors are believed to have influenced his decision to step down during the international break.

Looking forward, Tottenham now face a critical moment in their season. The team currently sits 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, with seven matches remaining. Relegation would represent their first drop from the top division since 1977, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Focus has now shifted to the search for a new manager. Sean Dyche, widely respected for his ability to stabilise struggling teams, has stated that he has not yet been contacted. Meanwhile, Roberto De Zerbi, who earned praise for his attacking style during his time at Brighton, continues to be strongly linked with the role.

There is also internal discussion about appointing a short-term “firefighter” manager to guide the club to safety before making a permanent appointment in the summer. With several key players underperforming and morale reportedly low in the dressing room, the next managerial decision could play a decisive role in shaping Tottenham’s immediate future.
