Tottenham risk being dragged deeper into the relegation battle unless the under-fire 4/10-rated star — who lost 14 of his 15 duels and struggled badly against Arsenal — can swiftly regain his best form.

Igor Tudor could hardly have imagined a tougher introduction to the Premier League, as Tottenham Hotspur were thrashed 4–1 by fierce rivals Arsenal on Sunday night. Instead of marking the start of a new era, the defeat served as a harsh reality check. Spurs were second-best throughout much of the contest and physically overpowered after the interval, underlining the scale of the task facing their new boss.

The match began with the usual intensity of a North London derby, but the momentum swung decisively after halftime. Mikel Arteta’s side raised their level, mercilessly targeting Tottenham’s frailties and turning the game into a one-sided affair. By the final whistle, Spurs were left reeling from a heavy loss that leaves them just four points clear of the relegation zone — a sobering reality for a club that once aimed far higher.

Defensive Frailties Exposed

Any doubts Tudor had about where improvements are needed were quickly clarified. Arsenal have now won their last five league meetings with Spurs, and the contrast in confidence and cohesion was unmistakable. While the Gunners hold a five-point lead at the summit, Tottenham remain entrenched in a survival battle.

The defensive unit bore the brunt of the damage. Micky van de Ven endured a difficult evening, repeatedly unsettled by the movement and direct approach of Bukayo Saka, who cut inside and attacked with purpose.

Archie Gray also struggled in what may have been the sternest challenge of his young career. The former Leeds midfielder managed to win just one of six duels and conceded possession 16 times, unable to match the tempo and strength of the occasion. He was outmuscled by Viktor Gyökeres for Arsenal’s fourth goal, with Radu Drăgușin similarly finding the striker a handful.

In midfield, Conor Gallagher failed to stamp his authority as Arsenal dictated both pace and possession. Gyökeres struck soon after the restart, setting the tone for a second half in which Tottenham looked hesitant rather than proactive.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp described the contest as a “complete mismatch” — a verdict few would dispute.

Simons Under the Spotlight

Although defensive lapses stood out, the most alarming display may have come from Xavi Simons. The £52 million arrival generated high expectations last summer and has produced flashes of brilliance, including a standout performance against Manchester City earlier this month.

Against Arsenal, though, he struggled to make an impact. Simons won only one of 15 duels, surrendered possession 24 times, failed in all four dribble attempts, and managed just a single shot on target. In a fixture demanding bravery and decisiveness, he delivered neither.

With the fight for survival intensifying, Tudor may need to rethink his forward options. A trip to Craven Cottage looms, and the likes of Dominic Solanke or Richarlison could be considered to inject greater power and urgency.

A Mountain to Climb

Tottenham’s last league triumph came in December against Crystal Palace, highlighting the extent of their slide. The belief that once drove this squad has given way to doubt and vulnerability.

Despite the setback, Tudor maintained composure afterward, downplaying relegation concerns and expressing confidence in the squad’s ability to steer clear of trouble. At least publicly, he remains steadfast.

The coming weeks will reveal whether that conviction can inspire a turnaround. Defensive organisation must tighten, midfield battles must be approached with greater resolve, and underperforming players may need to step aside if standards are to rise.

For Tudor, the brutal introduction is behind him. Now comes the more demanding mission — restoring confidence, reestablishing stability, and pulling Tottenham back from the brink.
