If Xabi Alonso replaces Arne Slot as Liverpool manager, he is reportedly planning a major squad overhaul.
Liverpool suffered a damaging 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, ending their 13-game unbeaten streak and leaving the team in sixth place. The loss has increased pressure on Slot, whose last Premier League win was against Wolves on December 27. Should Slot be dismissed, Alonso, who was surprisingly let go by Real Madrid earlier this month, is expected to be the top candidate.
Reports suggest Alonso would bring in four major signings while offloading five current players.
His transfer targets reportedly include Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton to energize midfield, and attackers Bradley Barcola (PSG) and Michael Olise (Bayern Munich) to revamp Liverpool’s front line.
To make room for these additions, Alonso has reportedly identified five players for departure.
Centre-back Ibrahima Konate could leave on a free transfer in the summer, while midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch might also be sold despite their key roles in last season’s title win. Cody Gakpo is another likely exit, and, in a major shake-up, Mohamed Salah could be sold, with Olise seen as his potential replacement.
