The countdown to the new Premier League campaign is well and truly on, with just 18 days left before the action gets underway. Arsenal and Coventry City will kick things off on August 21, and the transfer market is buzzing as clubs scramble to get their business done in time. Arsenal will be defending their title this time around, and with several rivals investing heavily over the summer — some under entirely new management — holding onto the crown looks set to be tougher than ever. As many as eight top-flight clubs will start the season under fresh head coaches, a sign of just how much upheaval has hit English football, with Liverpool bringing in Andoni Iraola, Manchester City turning to Enzo Maresca, and Chelsea handing the reins to former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea look to be stepping up their efforts to fix a left-back problem left by Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. The Blues have been strongly tied to Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria for weeks, and it’s now understood they’ve raised their opening bid from roughly £13 million to around £17 million in hopes of prising the 28-year-old away — though Rayo are said to want closer to £21 million before agreeing to sell. That puts Chelsea in a bit of a bind: push their offer higher and lock down their man, or risk letting rivals muscle in. Encouragingly for Chelsea, Chavarria is believed to have already agreed personal terms, which would put them in a strong position. Alonso reportedly sees the defender as someone who could step straight into the side, offering genuine competition for Jorrel Hato — a promising talent, but not a natural left-back. Handing a young player the starting role outright for a full Premier League campaign would be a gamble, so Chavarria could offer Chelsea a dependable stopgap while they continue eyeing a bigger long-term option down the line.
Elsewhere, Jack Grealish’s future is shaping up to be one of the summer’s more intriguing subplots. Aston Villa are said to have held talks over bringing the England international back to the club where he came through the academy, with Grealish viewed as a possible replacement for Leon Bailey, who looks set for a move to Hull City. A homecoming would make for one of the summer’s most emotional stories, given Grealish’s rise through Villa’s ranks before his big-money switch to Manchester City. Everton, meanwhile, are reportedly keen to keep him on loan for another year, and interest has also been noted from the Saudi Pro League and MLS — meaning his next step is far from decided.
Tottenham, too, could be plotting a major move up front. Having already overhauled their defence and midfield under Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs still have gaps to fill in goal and at centre-forward, and they appear ready to make a serious play for Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, who the Turkish side reportedly value at around £65 million. Spurs are said to have already made two approaches in the £50-55 million range, though it’s unclear whether these were formal bids or informal soundings — either way, they seem to be testing Galatasaray’s willingness to sell. Landing Osimhen would be a real statement of intent, with his pace, power and finishing offering De Zerbi a different kind of attacking threat. Spurs won’t have it easy, though, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid all said to be keeping tabs on the Nigerian striker — meaning Tottenham may need to act fast if they want to beat their rivals to a deal.
With the window entering its final stretch, all three stories — Chelsea’s left-back hunt, Grealish’s uncertain future, and Tottenham’s pursuit of Osimhen — look poised to deliver plenty more twists before deadline day.
