Tottenham are open to offloading a key defender once the transfer window gets underway this summer, with uncertainty continuing to surround Djed Spence’s future at the club.
The 25-year-old full-back was part of the Spurs squad that only just avoided the drop last season, and after a mixed campaign domestically, he impressed for England at the 2026 World Cup, with his showings in North America catching the eye of several clubs. Inter Milan tried to move for him early in the window but were quickly rebuffed once Tottenham made their valuation clear.
Interest has also come from within the Premier League, with both Liverpool and Manchester United monitoring the situation. Spence himself seems open to a fresh start elsewhere in pursuit of more consistent playing time, especially with Andy Robertson’s arrival strengthening competition on the left and Pedro Porro entrenched on the right at Spurs. That squeeze on his opportunities has led Tottenham to put a £35 million valuation on him and signal a willingness to talks offers.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, however, has downplayed the extent of Liverpool’s involvement. Speaking on the Market Madness podcast, he explained that he currently has nothing concrete linking Spence to Liverpool, adding that it remains to be seen whether they enter the race at all, but as things stand there’s no firm connection between the two parties.
Liverpool’s defensive options have been stretched by a rocky pre-season, with Virgil van Dijk being eased back in after international duty, Joe Gomez picking up a knock in the first friendly, and summer addition Jeremy Jacquet still to debut following a shoulder problem picked up at Rennes. Conor Bradley also remains out as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury last season, leaving the right-back slot particularly thin.
Despite those issues, Liverpool are not currently in active pursuit of Spence, even though his ability to play on either flank makes him an attractive option. Romano’s comments suggest the rumours are overstated for now, but a late swoop before the window shuts hasn’t been ruled out — something Tottenham will want to stay alert to.
