Liverpool’s Transfer Turmoil Could Leave Andoni Iraola Facing the Consequences
Spare a thought for Andoni Iraola.
The new Liverpool manager was always going to face a difficult task after taking over from Arne Slot at the end of the 2025/26 season. However, the level of uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s transfer plans is something few would have anticipated.
Iraola would have expected to inherit a recruitment structure capable of providing the players required to build a strong and competitive squad. Unfortunately, that expectation has not quite been met.
Liverpool completed the signing of Victor Munoz in June, but supporters then had to wait 53 days before the club made another major addition in Ronald Araujo. With the new campaign now just around the corner, serious questions are being raised about whether enough was done early enough to strengthen the team.
That should be a major concern.
Liverpool are preparing to compete on several fronts in the 2026/27 season, yet there are still obvious areas of the squad that appear to require reinforcement.
Araujo’s arrival undoubtedly adds quality and depth to the defence, but the timing of the deal has also attracted attention. Instead of appearing to be part of a carefully planned recruitment strategy, the move can be viewed as a reaction to issues that Liverpool may have been expected to identify much earlier.
That puts Iraola in an extremely difficult situation.
Ultimately, the Spanish manager will be judged by Liverpool’s results, regardless of how much influence he had over the squad he inherited or the club’s transfer decisions.
Should Liverpool endure a difficult start to the season, it will inevitably be the manager who faces much of the criticism and pressure.
That is what makes the current situation particularly concerning.
Iraola was appointed to lead Liverpool into a new chapter, but unless the club provides him with the quality and depth required to compete, he could find himself being held accountable for problems that existed well before his arrival at Anfield.
