Ashley Phillips’ move to Middlesbrough has reportedly been thrown into doubt after a medical issue emerged.
The Tottenham defender travelled to Teesside after Spurs and Middlesbrough reached an agreement over a permanent transfer that could reportedly rise to around £20 million. However, the deal has now been put on hold following unexpected findings during his medical. 👀
Middlesbrough had reportedly agreed to pay around £7m up front, with performance-related bonuses potentially taking the total package close to £20m. Personal terms were also understood to have been agreed, leaving the medical as one of the final steps before completing the transfer.
Phillips impressed during his loan spell at Stoke City last season, making 44 Championship appearances, and his performances convinced Boro that he could become a key part of their defence.
Tottenham would also have benefited financially from the deal, having signed the centre-back from Blackburn Rovers for around £2m in 2023, while reportedly retaining a 20% sell-on clause.
For now, both clubs’ medical teams are investigating the issue, with the next steps dependent on the results of further examinations.
A major setback for both Phillips and Middlesbrough.
