Liverpool Make Stunning Transfer U-Turn as Shelved Deal Suddenly Returns to the Table

Liverpool could be preparing for an unexpected return to the transfer market after reportedly reigniting their interest in Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye.

The Reds have had a relatively quiet summer despite expectations that new head coach Andoni Iraola would oversee a significant squad rebuild.

Liverpool have brought in Osasuna winger Victor Munoz for £34.6 million, while Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has joined on a season-long loan. However, strengthening the attack remains a major priority following Mohamed Salah’s departure.

Liverpool Revive Interest in Ibrahim Mbaye

Liverpool’s primary attacking target remains PSG winger Bradley Barcola, with reports suggesting the Reds are willing to make a major financial commitment for the France international.

However, PSG’s reported £145 million valuation has created a significant obstacle, with Liverpool believed to be unwilling to exceed £120 million.

As a result, the Reds have started exploring alternative options, with Barcola’s PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye emerging as a potential target.

The 18-year-old had previously been linked with Liverpool, but the club was reportedly ready to walk away after PSG’s asking price proved too high. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano had even suggested that a move was effectively off the table.

That may no longer be the case.

According to L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi, Liverpool have maintained their interest in Mbaye and could submit an opening offer in the coming days.

The potential fee has yet to be revealed, but the reported development suggests the Reds are ready to make a serious attempt to sign the highly-rated teenager.

Mbaye is also reportedly open to a move to Anfield, potentially giving Liverpool encouragement ahead of any negotiations with PSG.

Could Mbaye Impact the Barcola Pursuit?

Liverpool’s renewed interest in Mbaye could have an impact on their long-running pursuit of Barcola.

Bringing in both PSG attackers would require a huge financial outlay, while Liverpool may also need to create space within their squad.

Cody Gakpo could become particularly important to those plans.

The Netherlands international has been linked with Tottenham throughout the summer, with reports suggesting he could consider leaving Liverpool due to concerns about his role under Iraola.

Liverpool are reportedly seeking around £70 million for Gakpo, almost twice the £35 million they paid PSV for him in December 2022.

Since arriving at Anfield, the 27-year-old has made 180 appearances across all competitions, scoring 50 goals and providing 23 assists.

He was also an important contributor during Liverpool’s successful 2024/25 title campaign.

Gakpo Sale Could Influence Liverpool’s Plans

A potential sale of Gakpo to Tottenham could provide Liverpool with both additional funds and valuable space in Iraola’s squad.

That could give the Reds greater flexibility to pursue Mbaye while keeping their efforts to sign Barcola alive.

For now, though, Mbaye appears to be the latest development to monitor closely.

A deal that once seemed to have been abandoned could now be revived, with Liverpool reportedly preparing an opening bid in the coming days.

With the September 1 transfer deadline getting closer, Liverpool’s summer business could be heading towards a dramatic conclusion.
