Liverpool have reportedly been presented with an opportunity to sign Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, a move that could help Andoni Iraola address one of his biggest squad concerns.
The Reds have endured a difficult pre-season in terms of defensive options. Iraola was without a senior centre-back for much of Liverpool’s tour of the United States after Joe Gomez suffered an injury just minutes into their opening friendly against Sunderland.
With sporting director Richard Hughes having less than a month to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes, a potential solution has now emerged.
According to Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, intermediaries have approached Liverpool regarding a possible deal for Asencio after the 23-year-old was reportedly told he could leave Real Madrid this summer.
Liverpool have admired the Spanish defender for some time and were reportedly interested after learning that he could be available. Iraola is also said to be a fan of Asencio, particularly because of his ability to operate both at centre-back and on the right side of defence.
However, convincing the player could prove difficult. Asencio reportedly has no intention of leaving the Bernabeu and remains determined to establish himself in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI. There have also been no formal transfer talks so far.
Asencio could be an ideal fit for Liverpool
Asencio would offer Liverpool several qualities they urgently need.
Although primarily a centre-back, his versatility would allow him to cover at right-back too. That could be particularly valuable given Liverpool’s recent injury problems involving Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, with Bradley expected to remain sidelined for several months.
His statistics also suggest he could suit Iraola’s aggressive, high-pressing approach. During the 2025/26 La Liga campaign, Asencio recorded a 94% pass-completion rate, ranking him among the top six per cent of positional peers. He also ranked highly for successful passes, winning possession in the final third and touches inside the opposition box.
Those numbers highlight a defender who is comfortable in possession while also capable of contributing to an intense pressing system.
The biggest obstacle remains Asencio himself. His desire to stay at Real Madrid could make it extremely difficult for Hughes to convince him to move to Anfield unless Liverpool can guarantee him an important role.
Nevertheless, Liverpool would be wise to explore the opportunity. If they can persuade the Spaniard to make the switch, Asencio could provide Iraola with much-needed depth and versatility while addressing one of the most pressing weaknesses in his squad.
