Liverpool have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio, a player who could potentially solve one of Andoni Iraola’s biggest squad problems.
The Reds have endured a difficult pre-season defensively, with Iraola lacking senior centre-back options for much of the club’s tour of the United States. Joe Gomez’s early injury in the opening friendly against Sunderland only made the situation worse.
With sporting director Richard Hughes having less than a month to strengthen the squad, Asencio has emerged as a potential solution.
Liverpool Approach Over Raúl Asencio
According to reports, intermediaries have contacted Liverpool regarding a possible move for the 23-year-old, who has reportedly been told he can leave Real Madrid before the transfer window closes.
Liverpool have held a long-term interest in Asencio and are believed to have been intrigued by his availability. Iraola is also said to be an admirer of the defender, particularly because of his ability to operate both at centre-back and on the right side of defence.
However, Asencio currently has no intention of leaving Madrid. The Spanish defender wants to stay at the Bernabéu and compete for a place in José Mourinho’s starting XI.
With no formal transfer talks taking place so far, a move to Liverpool is unlikely to progress unless Asencio changes his position.
Why Asencio Could Be Ideal for Liverpool
Asencio would offer Liverpool exactly the kind of versatility they need at the moment.
Primarily a centre-back, the 23-year-old is also capable of playing at right-back, giving Iraola another option in an area affected by injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.
His defensive qualities could also make him particularly suited to Iraola’s high-intensity, pressing style. His ability to win possession high up the pitch would fit naturally into the manager’s tactical approach.
The major obstacle, however, remains convincing Asencio to leave Real Madrid. If Liverpool can change his mind, he could prove to be an ideal addition to Iraola’s squad.
