Liverpool End Pre-Season with Comfortable 2-0 Victory Over Como
Liverpool concluded their 2026 pre-season campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Como at Anfield on Sunday evening. First-half goals from Cody Gakpo and debutant Jeremy Jacquet secured the victory and gave the Reds a positive finish ahead of the new campaign.
Jacquet was arguably the standout performer, producing an impressive debut in a Liverpool shirt. The young defender looked calm and aggressive from the start, winning challenges, disrupting Como’s attacks and showing plenty of confidence at the back. He capped his display with a close-range header shortly before half-time.
Gakpo also delivered an encouraging performance amid continued speculation over his future. Starting on the left, the Dutch forward caused problems with his movement and scored a composed left-footed finish before helping create the second goal with a clever pass into the box.
Jeremie Frimpong was another standout performer. His constant runs down the right gave Liverpool an additional attacking outlet, while his dangerous cross played a key role in the opening goal. He also contributed defensively with several timely interventions.
Virgil van Dijk looked composed as he continued building his fitness ahead of the Premier League opener. The Liverpool captain organised the defence alongside Jacquet and helped his new teammate settle into the side. He also contributed to the build-up for the second goal by winning possession and starting the move.
However, it was a difficult evening for Alexander Isak. The striker had several opportunities to make an impact but struggled with his finishing and found it difficult to establish a rhythm. His performance came ahead of his much-anticipated return to St. James’ Park in Liverpool colours.
Alisson, Kerkez, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Ngumoha and Wirtz also featured, while Araujo, Koumas, Munoz, Nyoni and Wight were among the substitutes given minutes as Arne Slot continued rotating his squad.
Overall, Liverpool’s final pre-season outing provided plenty of positives, with Jacquet, Gakpo and Frimpong particularly impressive as the Reds prepare for the start of the new season.
