Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool Future Remains Uncertain Amid Tottenham Interest
Liverpool supporters are still waiting for clarity over Cody Gakpo’s future, with conflicting reports continuing to circulate about the winger’s situation.
Reports from the Netherlands claim that the 27-year-old could be willing to consider a move to Tottenham, who are believed to have a strong interest in him. TEAMtalk has also reported that Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola could sanction Gakpo’s departure if the Reds manage to secure an adequate replacement before the transfer window closes.
Liverpool are currently linked with PSG winger Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, potentially paving the way for significant changes to their attacking options before deadline day.
Conflicting reports emerge
On Tuesday, Alex Crook told talkSPORT that Liverpool are unlikely to allow Gakpo to move to Tottenham.
Crook claimed that sources close to Liverpool believe Gakpo has impressed during pre-season under Iraola, with the manager reportedly convinced that the Dutchman can improve further at Anfield.
Although Gakpo may be open to leaving, Crook believes a switch to Spurs remains unlikely at this stage.
Fabrizio Romano, however, has provided a contrasting update, insisting Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo is still active.
Romano revealed that talks between the two clubs remain ongoing despite reports that the deal had fallen through. Gakpo is reportedly open to joining Tottenham, while personal terms are not expected to present a major obstacle.
The key issue is believed to be reaching an agreement over the transfer fee.
Romano added that Liverpool could target two new wingers if Gakpo leaves, with Barcola among their main targets.
What happens next?
Gakpo’s future remains difficult to predict as the transfer deadline approaches.
Much could depend on Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola and Mbaye. The Reds would be unlikely to let Gakpo leave without first securing a significant attacking replacement.
If Liverpool manage to sign Barcola, the possibility of Gakpo moving to Tottenham could become more realistic. Even then, Liverpool are expected to demand a substantial fee for the Dutch international.
Gakpo endured an inconsistent campaign last season but has looked considerably sharper this summer. He impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup and has also produced strong performances during Liverpool’s pre-season, including scoring and providing an assist against Como.
With deadline day getting closer, uncertainty continues to surround Gakpo’s future. Liverpool fans will now have to wait and see whether the Dutch winger remains at Anfield or makes the switch to North London.
