Boosting the academy has become a major focus for Tottenham Hotspur this summer, even as the club splashed out roughly £237million strengthening the senior squad during the transfer window.
Cole Ramsey has already joined the youth ranks at Spurs, and the club shows no signs of slowing down in its search for more promising young talent. Tottenham are working on securing Wolves youngster Kwasi Senyah, and are also chasing the signature of 16-year-old Manchester City prospect Xavier Parker.
Spurs pip Arsenal to Isaac Allen
Daily Mail journalist Isaan Khan reports that Tottenham have wrapped up another notable academy signing, this time landing highly rated youngster Isaac Allen.
Allen is currently on West Ham’s books and has already captained England at Under-15 level, having earned caps at that age group. His performances had caught the eye of a number of clubs, Arsenal among them, but it’s Tottenham who have come out on top in the race to sign him.
The deal is reportedly done in all but name, with a formal announcement due to follow shortly.
Venkatesham backs the academy push
Spurs chief executive Vinai Venkatesham had already flagged academy development as a summer priority, stressing that homegrown talent breaking into the first team is a cornerstone of the club’s future plans.
On why the academy matters, Venkatesham explained that a strong academy setup is crucial going forward, since it supplies first-team-ready players without the need for transfer fees, freeing up funds to spend elsewhere in the squad. He added that it also produces players who’ve grown up as Spurs fans and genuinely understand what representing the club means.
He also admitted there’s work to do in improving the route from academy to first team, and in maximizing the value the club gets from its young players. While recruitment and coaching have improved in recent years, Venkatesham said the club still needs to see more first-team opportunities and transfer profit coming out of the academy — which is why extra investment has gone into strengthening the pipeline and the infrastructure behind it.
With Isaac Allen’s arrival joining a string of other exciting young signings this summer, it’s clear Tottenham are putting real weight behind that promise and building toward a stronger academy system for years to come.
