Arsenal Fans Question Martinelli’s Future After Tzolis Shines Against Coventry
Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage shortly after. Captain Martin Ødegaard then added a third with another impressive finish, continuing his excellent form.
However, much of the attention was directed towards new signing Christos Tzolis, whose outstanding display on the left wing has already sparked questions about Gabriel Martinelli’s future at the club.
The £34 million summer signing from Club Brugge looked dangerous throughout his 75 minutes on the pitch. Although he failed to score or assist, Tzolis registered four shots and three key passes while completing 81% of his passes.
His performance earned a standing ovation when he was replaced by Eberechi Eze, with Mikel Arteta also congratulating the Greek winger.
Tzolis’ impressive start has left Arsenal supporters excited, with some already suggesting that the 24-year-old could become one of the league’s best left-wingers.
One fan wrote on social media: “Tzolis is electric. It’s over for Martinelli.”
Another questioned whether Martinelli would get back into the team after watching the new signing’s performance.
Martinelli’s situation has become increasingly uncertain. The Brazilian was not even included on Arteta’s substitutes’ bench against Coventry and has been linked with a move away from the Emirates.
Arsenal reportedly agreed a £38.4 million deal with Galatasaray for the winger, although Martinelli rejected the opportunity to join the Turkish club.
With the transfer window still open, Tzolis’ breakthrough performance could have major implications for Martinelli. If the Greek winger maintains this level, his Brazilian teammate could find it extremely difficult to reclaim a regular starting position.
The performance may also convince Arsenal to reconsider their search for another high-profile left winger, particularly if Martinelli remains at the club.
For now, Tzolis has made an immediate impression—and Arsenal fans are already wondering whether a new star has emerged on the left flank.
