The coming weeks could be crucial for Andoni Iraola as he looks to make a strong impression and become a fan favourite during his time as Liverpool manager.
The Spaniard has been given the task of restoring Liverpool to their former glory following a disappointing campaign under Arne Slot, but he urgently needs more quality and depth within his squad.
Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo remain the only senior additions this summer, with Liverpool spending just £35m and fewer than 10 days remaining before the transfer window closes. However, several new names have now emerged on the club’s shortlist, with one target seemingly moving towards the top of their priorities.
How Minteh could improve Liverpool’s attack
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh in recent days as Iraola looks to add more attacking quality and depth.
The Gambian has been a long-term target for the Reds, who have already seen a bid rejected by Brighton. The Seagulls are reportedly demanding around £70m for the 22-year-old, although it remains uncertain whether Liverpool are prepared to meet that valuation.
Mohamed Salah’s departure has increased the need for another right-sided attacker, making Minteh an appealing option.
While his seven combined goals and assists last season may not immediately stand out, his underlying statistics show considerable promise. He averaged 2.4 successful dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League, placing him among the top 10% of forwards in the competition.
Minteh also recorded 1.4 successful crosses per 90 minutes during the 2025/26 campaign, ranking him above 90% of players in his position across Europe’s top-five leagues.
Liverpool could sign a more proven player for £50m
Despite the interest in Minteh, PSG winger Bradley Barcola reportedly remains Liverpool’s primary target before the transfer window closes.
The Frenchman has been consistently linked with a move to Anfield, while David Ornstein recently confirmed that Liverpool are still looking to add two wingers.
Crystal Palace forward Ismaïla Sarr has also emerged as a potential target, with reports suggesting Iraola’s side are interested in signing the Senegal international.
Competition for Sarr’s signature is growing, with Galatasaray also reportedly monitoring the 28-year-old. Palace are believed to value the winger at around £50m.
That would create a £20m difference between Sarr and Minteh, with the two players also at different stages of their careers.
Minteh remains a promising young talent with plenty of room to develop, whereas Sarr is entering his prime and already has significant Premier League experience.
The Palace star scored nine goals in 28 league appearances last season, three more than Minteh managed. He also recorded more shots on target, highlighting his greater attacking output.
Sarr’s ability to win fouls further demonstrates the danger he poses to defenders, while his impressive numbers for line-breaking passes underline the creative threat he can provide.
For around £50m, Liverpool could therefore secure an experienced attacker capable of making an immediate impact.
Minteh may represent a strong investment for the future, but if Iraola and Liverpool are focused on challenging for silverware immediately, Sarr could be the more sensible choice.
