Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall’s future has taken another turn, with Newcastle United reportedly considering a renewed and improved offer for the 20-year-old.
The Magpies previously tested Spurs’ resolve with a bid of around £46 million, but Tottenham rejected the proposal. However, reports suggested that a significantly higher offer could tempt the North London club into reconsidering their position, while Bergvall was also believed to be open to leaving in search of more consistent first-team football.
That situation appears to have changed following comments from Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi. When asked whether Bergvall wanted to remain at the club, De Zerbi made his position clear, revealing that he had spoken extensively with the midfielder during pre-season and now believes the youngster is fully committed to Tottenham.
The latest comments represent a major shift from earlier reports. Bergvall made only 11 Premier League starts last season, partly because of injury, and was reportedly keen to play more regularly in his preferred No. 8 position. Newcastle’s initial £46 million offer was therefore viewed as an attempt to take advantage of the uncertainty, with Spurs reportedly valuing him closer to £60 million.
There had even been suggestions that Tottenham were becoming increasingly open to the possibility of selling him. De Zerbi’s latest comments, however, have thrown that storyline into doubt.
Bergvall has also impressed during pre-season and could now push for a regular starting role. The arrival of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle has increased competition in midfield, but the young Swede appears ready to fight for his place.
For Newcastle, the situation is now far less straightforward. They could still return with a much-improved bid if they consider Bergvall a key part of their long-term plans, but Tottenham currently appear much more determined to keep him.
With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, the next few days could prove decisive. What once looked like a potential move away from Spurs now appears to depend heavily on Bergvall’s performances and, most importantly, his own decision about his future.
