Tottenham Hotspur youngster Jamie Donley is reportedly closing in on a move to Luton Town, with the Northern Ireland international said to be undergoing his medical ahead of the transfer.
The 21-year-old featured prominently during Tottenham’s pre-season, appearing against MK Dons, Auckland, Sydney, Chelsea and Hoffenheim. Although he impressed new Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi with his performances, Donley is now expected to leave temporarily in search of more regular first-team opportunities.
Talks between Tottenham and Luton Town are believed to have progressed well, and Donley reportedly travelled for his medical on Friday morning. The move would see him link up with fellow Northern Ireland international Callum Marshall at Kenilworth Road, where former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is in charge.
Luton reportedly see Donley as a talented player with plenty of room for development. The club believe that regular game time and increased responsibility could help him take another important step in his career and develop further as a senior player.
The plan is for Donley to continue his progress at Luton before potentially returning to Tottenham as a more experienced and complete player, capable of competing for a place in De Zerbi’s first-team squad.
Tottenham and Luton are understood to have a positive relationship, and those at Kenilworth Road reportedly believe Donley has the ability and mentality to make a strong impact. Donley already has experience of senior football after previous loan spells with Stoke City and Oxford United. He made a combined 17 league appearances for the two clubs last season, although neither loan spell provided the consistent breakthrough he may have hoped for.
Despite those challenges, his reputation has continued to grow on the international stage. After deciding to represent Northern Ireland in March 2025, the Antrim-born forward quickly became an important member of Michael O’Neill’s squad.
He has already scored twice in 10 senior international appearances and has increasingly been viewed as one of Northern Ireland’s leading options in the striker position. His growing importance was further demonstrated when he started the World Cup play-off semi-final against Italy in March.
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has previously spoken highly of Donley, particularly following his goal against Luxembourg. O’Neill believes the young forward possesses qualities that could help address Northern Ireland’s long-standing search for a reliable number nine.
According to the manager, Donley brings something different to the team, with his technical quality, strong left foot, vision and awareness making him an exciting attacking prospect.
O’Neill has also recalled being impressed by Donley during his spell at Leyton Orient, where his performances caught the eye. He believes that developing at a club like Tottenham has played an important role in improving the youngster’s technical ability and understanding of the game.
While Donley’s previous loan moves may not have gone entirely as planned, O’Neill does not believe those experiences should be seen as major setbacks. Instead, he feels that difficult periods and unsuccessful spells can still provide important lessons for a young player developing his career.
Now, with a move to Luton Town appearing to be close, Donley will be hoping to finally find the consistency and regular playing time needed to push his career to the next level.
