Chelsea are reportedly exploring a surprise move for former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum after their dramatic failure to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara on deadline day.
The Blues were left short in midfield after Enzo Fernández completed a £125 million move to Manchester City, while their late attempt to bring in Camara collapsed at the final stage.
According to reports from Foot Mercato, Chelsea made contact with the 35-year-old Wijnaldum, who is currently a free agent after leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. Because he is unattached, Chelsea could still sign him despite the Premier League transfer window closing.
Wijnaldum remains an experienced Premier League midfielder, having spent five seasons at Liverpool and helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League, among other major trophies.
However, there is an important twist: Fabrizio Romano has reportedly played down the possibility of the move, with Chelsea not currently expected to pursue Wijnaldum.
So, despite the initial reports of contact, a return to the Premier League for Wijnaldum—this time in Chelsea blue—appears far from certain.
The former Liverpool hero could be heading back to England… but will it really be Stamford Bridge? 👀🔵
