Liverpool Caught Up in Dramatic Deadline-Day Saga That Left Premier League Rival Furious
Liverpool were reportedly involved behind the scenes in one of the biggest transfer dramas of deadline day, with a fellow Premier League club said to be furious after a late deal collapsed.
It was a relatively quiet deadline day at Anfield. Liverpool’s only incoming transfer was Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, who will spend the current season back on loan at Genk. The Reds also sanctioned several late departures, including Harvey Elliott’s loan move to Valencia, while Stefan Bajcetic completed a permanent transfer to Celta Vigo.
Liverpool ultimately chose not to strengthen their midfield on deadline day, although reports suggest they already have their eyes on one potential target for a future window.
Liverpool reportedly intervened in Lamine Camara transfer
Lamine Camara was at the centre of one of deadline day’s most dramatic transfer stories.
Chelsea initially saw a bid worth around £38.5 million rejected for the Monaco midfielder before eventually reaching an agreement worth approximately £47 million. Camara was even given permission to travel for a medical as the transfer appeared close to completion.
However, Monaco later changed their position after negotiations surrounding Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton broke down. The Ligue 1 side ultimately decided against selling Camara, leaving Chelsea reportedly furious.
According to reports from talkSPORT, Liverpool contacted Monaco on deadline day and asked the French club to delay Camara’s transfer.
The Reds were not attempting to sign the 22-year-old immediately. Instead, Liverpool reportedly communicated their interest in bringing him to Anfield at a later date and indicated that they could return for him next year if his Chelsea move did not happen.
Liverpool may regret not signing Camara
Liverpool’s decision not to make an immediate move for Camara could potentially prove costly.
The Reds have already been questioned over their defensive midfield options, particularly following the departures and changes made to their squad during the summer.
Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are now expected to shoulder much of the responsibility in central midfield. However, none of the three are natural defensive midfield specialists, with all possessing stronger attacking qualities.
With the transfer window now closed, new manager Andoni Iraola will have to find a way to make the midfield more defensively secure. Liverpool have already shown vulnerability when opponents move through the centre of the pitch too easily.
Camara could potentially become an option when the transfer window reopens, but Liverpool may have to wait until January or even longer before making another attempt.
The longer the Reds leave the issue unresolved, the greater the possibility that their midfield weakness could affect their season.
For now, the collapse of Camara’s proposed move to Chelsea keeps the door open for Liverpool to make another approach in the future. The major question is whether the Reds will act soon enough to prevent their current midfield problems from damaging their campaign.
