Andoni Iraola Reveals Why Bradley Barcola Chose Liverpool
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has revealed that he barely needed to convince Bradley Barcola to join the Reds, with the French winger already eager to make the move to Anfield.
Barcola’s reported £123 million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain became one of the biggest deals of the summer, bringing the 23-year-old to Merseyside as Liverpool’s new No.29.
Despite the lengthy negotiations between Liverpool and PSG, Iraola says persuading Barcola was never a major concern.
“I always had the feeling with Bradley that I didn’t need to convince him to come,” Iraola explained.
The Liverpool boss believes Barcola’s previous experiences against the club played an important role in his decision. Having faced Liverpool in recent seasons, the forward had already experienced the atmosphere at Anfield and understood the scale of the club.
Iraola added that Barcola’s conversations with him were largely focused on football rather than personal ambitions.
“He was asking questions about football, tactics and the position he was going to play,” the manager said.
The winger was also reportedly open to operating on either flank or through the middle, something Iraola believes could benefit Liverpool as they look to develop their attacking options.
What impressed the manager most was Barcola’s willingness to focus on the team rather than simply asking how he could stand out individually.
Liverpool now have plenty of options across the attack, with Barcola joining a forward line that also includes major summer additions such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, alongside established options like Cody Gakpo and Victor Muñoz.
The big question will be where Iraola decides to use Barcola. His ability to play on both wings gives Liverpool another versatile and dangerous attacking weapon.
Barcola is expected to be integrated quickly and could be in contention for his Liverpool debut against Ipswich Town.
However, Iraola will need to carefully manage his minutes after the winger had limited traditional pre-season preparation. His most recent competitive appearance came on July 18, when France lost 6-4 to England in the World Cup third-place play-off.
Still, Iraola believes Barcola is physically and mentally ready to contribute.
With his pace, versatility and willingness to adapt to Liverpool’s tactical demands, Barcola could quickly become a key figure in Iraola’s new-look Reds attack.
