Tottenham face January decision as Lucas Bergvall attracts Premier League interest
Lucas Bergvall could become a player to watch when the January transfer window opens after attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur had a busy deadline day as the club made a number of important decisions regarding Roberto De Zerbi’s squad. Kevin Danso departed for Sunderland and was replaced by Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, while Spurs also completed a loan move for Mykhailo Mudryk.
However, Bergvall’s future also became a major talking point. Chelsea made a late enquiry about the Swedish midfielder, with reports suggesting the 20-year-old was open to the possibility of moving to Stamford Bridge. Tottenham, though, were unwilling to sanction his departure after already allowing Pape Matar Sarr to join Juventus.
Nottingham Forest could return for Bergvall
Chelsea were not the only Premier League side interested in Bergvall. Nottingham Forest had previously explored a deal for the midfielder earlier in the summer, but Tottenham rejected their approach.
Forest subsequently turned their attention to Everton youngster Harrison Armstrong. They reportedly submitted a £40million offer plus a potential sell-on clause, with Everton initially accepting the proposal before the club eventually abandoned the deal following a strong reaction from supporters.
According to reports from The Telegraph, Forest could now revive their interest in Bergvall when the transfer window reopens in January. The club remain admirers of the Scandinavian talent, who had reportedly expressed a desire to leave Tottenham in search of more regular first-team football.
De Zerbi, however, held extensive discussions with Bergvall and managed to persuade him to remain in north London. Tottenham are believed to value the midfielder at around £60million.
Bergvall’s lack of playing time could become crucial
Bergvall started Tottenham’s opening Premier League fixture against Brentford but was substituted at half-time after a difficult first-half performance, with Spurs eventually suffering a 3-0 defeat.
He was then left on the bench for the entire 2-0 loss to Newcastle United, as De Zerbi opted for Sandro Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur and Mateus Fernandes in midfield.
That lack of opportunities could ultimately influence Bergvall’s future. If his situation does not improve over the next few months, the Swedish midfielder could push for a January departure.
Such a development would give Nottingham Forest renewed hope of landing him. New Forest boss Oliver Glasner is reportedly an admirer, and Bergvall’s ability to control the tempo of matches could make him an attractive option for a Forest side looking for greater creativity and control in midfield.
With the January window approaching, Tottenham may therefore have an important decision to make over one of their most highly-rated young midfielders.
