Liverpool could reportedly make a surprise move for former Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal, who is currently a free agent after ending his long and highly successful spell at the Spanish giants.
The 34-year-old remains available despite the European summer transfer window closing. Because Carvajal is unattached, Liverpool could still sign him outside the normal transfer window, potentially giving new manager Andoni Iraola an experienced option at right-back.
Joleon Lescott links Carvajal with Liverpool
The Liverpool connection was raised by former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott during an appearance on TNT Sports.
Lescott indicated that Liverpool were among the clubs being discussed in relation to Carvajal, with the Spanish defender potentially offering experienced cover on the right side of defence.
The report says Liverpool had looked for additional right-back cover before the transfer deadline but failed to complete a proposed loan move for Malo Gusto from Chelsea.
Carvajal could therefore represent an alternative solution without Liverpool having to pay a transfer fee.
Carvajal’s incredible Champions League record
Carvajal’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly his experience.
During his Real Madrid career, he won the Champions League six times, establishing himself as one of the most decorated right-backs of his generation. His experience at the highest level could be particularly valuable to a Liverpool squad competing in Europe.
Why could Liverpool consider him?
Liverpool already have Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley available at right-back. However, the report highlights concerns surrounding both players.
Frimpong provides tremendous attacking ability but is more naturally suited to a wing-back role, while Bradley has experienced injury problems.
Carvajal could therefore be viewed as a short-term, experienced solution rather than a long-term signing. At 34, he would not be expected to play every match, but his defensive intelligence, leadership and big-game experience could make him useful in important Premier League and Champions League fixtures.
The major concern
The obvious question is Carvajal’s fitness.
The veteran defender has endured significant injury problems in recent seasons, so Liverpool would need to be convinced that he can cope with the physical demands of English football.
However, because he is a free agent, the financial risk could be considerably lower than signing another right-back for a large transfer fee. The report suggests a deal could make sense if Carvajal’s wage demands are reasonable and he accepts a rotational role.
In short: this is currently a reported link rather than confirmation that Liverpool have made an offer. The idea is being discussed because Carvajal is available, hugely experienced and could provide immediate depth at right-back.
