Liverpool Linked With Former Real Madrid Star Dani Carvajal in Surprise Free-Agent Move
Liverpool could reportedly still add another option at right-back despite the summer transfer window closing, with former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal emerging as a potential free-agent target.
The 34-year-old is currently without a club after ending his highly successful career at Real Madrid. As a free agent, Carvajal can still sign for a new club outside the traditional transfer window.
Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has now suggested that Liverpool could be one of the clubs considering a move for the experienced Spanish full-back.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Lescott said there had been “talk of Liverpool” in relation to Carvajal.
The possibility is particularly interesting because Liverpool reportedly looked for additional cover at right-back before the transfer deadline but were unable to bring in Chelsea’s Malo Gusto on loan.
Carvajal would bring an extraordinary level of experience to Arne Slot’s squad. During his decorated Real Madrid career, the defender won the Champions League six times and established himself as one of Europe’s most accomplished right-backs.
Why Carvajal Could Make Sense for Liverpool
Liverpool already have Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley competing for the right-back role, but both players have their own concerns.
Frimpong offers tremendous attacking ability but has often looked more natural in a wing-back role, while Bradley’s progress has been disrupted by injury problems.
That could make Carvajal an appealing short-term option.
At 34, the Spaniard would not necessarily be expected to play every week. Instead, his experience, defensive awareness and leadership could prove valuable during difficult Premier League fixtures and Champions League matches.
The biggest question would undoubtedly be his fitness. Carvajal has endured serious injury setbacks in recent seasons, meaning Liverpool would need to be convinced that he could cope with the intensity of English football.
However, signing him as a free agent would carry considerably less financial risk than paying a significant transfer fee for another defender.
If Carvajal’s wage demands are reasonable and he is willing to accept a rotational role, Liverpool could view the six-time Champions League winner as a smart short-term solution.
