Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has provided an update on several players following the Reds’ dramatic 2–1 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
The main concern was new signing Bradley Barcola, who was substituted in the second half after appearing to struggle physically. However, Iraola confirmed that the French winger suffered cramp rather than an injury.
Iraola explained that Barcola is still building his fitness after having very little pre-season action with Paris Saint-Germain. The Liverpool boss was pleased with the winger’s performance, particularly after Barcola created two good opportunities despite failing to score.
Milos Kerkez also had to come off after experiencing fatigue and cramp. Iraola stressed that the decision was precautionary and not because of a serious injury.
The bigger concern is Cody Gakpo, who missed the Atletico Madrid game because of minor discomfort in his adductors. Iraola admitted that he is unsure whether the Dutch forward will recover in time for Liverpool’s next Premier League match against Fulham.
“It’s not a big thing, but the problem is we play here in two days and a half.”
The short turnaround between the Champions League match and the Fulham fixture means Liverpool’s medical team will have to carefully monitor Gakpo and the other players.
Liverpool will hope there are no further setbacks as Iraola prepares his squad for another important Premier League fixture.
The victory over Atletico was an important result for Liverpool, but the fitness of Barcola, Kerkez and particularly Gakpo will now be closely watched by supporters.
Liverpool fans, are you worried about the injury situation?
