Xavi Simons has headed to the United States to continue his rehabilitation as he works his way back from a serious knee injury. The Tottenham midfielder ruptured his ACL at the end of April, an injury that ended his season early and has kept him out for much of the current campaign too.
Before getting hurt, Simons had only made a couple of appearances under Roberto De Zerbi, who took charge in a bid to keep the club up in the Premier League. He’d made an instant impact under the new manager, scoring and assisting on his first start, only to be substituted the following weekend during a narrow win at Wolves — the last time he played. He’s since been a regular presence in training gear at the club’s training ground, though a full return isn’t expected until early next year.
Keen to speed things along, Simons has jetted to the US for the next phase of his recovery, visiting the Baltimore Ravens’ NFL facility this week. He also spent time at the Boston Bruins’ training base, swapping shirts with David Pastrnak, who had previously visited Tottenham’s stadium in 2023. While in Boston, he made a surprise appearance at a supporters’ club gathering on Saturday, shortly before Tottenham’s winless league run continued with a loss to Aston Villa.
Club sources say Santa Monica is next on his itinerary, and recent images show him putting in gym work, including exercises like dumbbell Bulgarian split squats. There’s still no firm return date, but his progress looks encouraging — a welcome sign for De Zerbi, who is currently under pressure.
Notably, when Simons welcomed new signing Savio in a club video back in August, he hinted at his own comeback, telling his new teammate he was working hard to return soon so they could eventually share the pitch together, adding that for now he’d be watching and supporting from the sidelines.
