Spurs loanee feels sidelined after De Zerbi chat, criticises lack of a pathway to the first team

Jamie Donley has spoken about missing out on a first-team place at Tottenham after a club-record summer of spending that brought in 10 new players. The Northern Ireland international has now joined League One side Luton Town on loan, though it is clear he had hoped to earn a spot at Spurs after travelling with the pre-season squad.

Donley says Roberto De Zerbi told him early on that he liked what he saw, and he played plenty of minutes on the tour of Australia. Things changed once several players returned from the World Cup, and he felt himself being edged out of the picture. By the end of the transfer window, he knew exactly what his season would look like.

The 21-year-old accepts the situation is tough, with so many players in the squad and big-money arrivals like £100million midfielder Sandro Tonali. He says he is not arrogant enough to expect to start ahead of them, but feels the club offers little in the way of a pathway. For now, his focus is on collecting minutes, improving, and returning next year to show how far he has come.

Tottenham’s struggles with developing youngsters have been a hot topic lately, especially after striker Will Lankshear left for Middlesbrough while scoring freely for club and country. Donley has already had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Stoke City and Oxford United, and he signed a long-term deal last summer when he moved to Kenilworth Road. That contract runs to 2029, but the squad is now packed with international talent, so he will need some movement ahead of him to get into De Zerbi’s plans.

On the international stage, Donley has two goals in 12 appearances for Northern Ireland and is keen to add to that tally. He says manager Michael O’Neill gives him confidence and trusts him, and he is happy to play as a striker even though it is not his natural role. He sees little difference from playing as a number 10, believes he links play well, and backs himself as a clean finisher whenever a good chance falls his way.

Donley first worked under O’Neill at Stoke, before leaving for Oxford United on loan in January when things were not working out for him there.
