Abbott managed 579 minutes of League One football for Mansfield before an injury in April brought his season to an early end. Even so, boss Nigel Clough was quick to credit the young midfielder for the impact he made at Field Mill.
The 21-year-old is a product of Tottenham’s academy and has already had loan spells at Notts County and Wycombe Wanderers. In the winter window he moved out again, this time to Mansfield, looking for regular first-team minutes and a chance to keep developing.
He did enough to win the Stags over, and the club brought him back on a season-long loan this summer so he can build on what he started in Nottinghamshire. The injury has kept him out of action so far this term, though he has now returned to full team training.
Abbott regards last season as hugely valuable and says he got plenty out of it, since it let him get back playing regularly after the previous campaign. He feels the injury came late enough that it did little to disrupt his progress, and he is glad to be back almost at the start of the new season without having lost much football.
Looking ahead, he wants to pick up where he left off and add more goals and assists to his game. Clough has hinted he could be in contention for the trip to Port Vale next Tuesday, which would be a big lift for both player and club.
Tottenham will be keen to see the academy graduate back on the pitch and playing consistently as he continues to grow.
Elsewhere among Spurs’ loanees, Pape Matar Sarr has earned strong praise for his displays since joining Juventus. Guglielmo Vicario has also settled well in Turin, with a former Juventus goalkeeper pointing to what he sees as a “desire for revenge” in the Tottenham stopper.
