It could become a decisive moment in the relegation fight after a controversial call denied Tottenham a clear penalty against Brighton, triggering significant fallout beyond the pitch.

The Professional Footballers’ Association is reportedly preparing to take action against referee Stuart Attwell following heavy criticism of his handling of the incident, with growing scrutiny also directed at VAR official Jarred Gillett for not intervening.

The controversy occurred early in the match when Spurs defender Destiny Udogie went down inside the box after a challenge from Yankuba Minteh, but appeals for a penalty were ignored. Attwell stuck with his on-field decision, and VAR chose not to overturn it.

Former referee Dermot Gallagher strongly criticised the incident, calling the VAR decision “bullshit” and reigniting debate about officiating standards and consistency. Ex-Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd also argued Tottenham were clearly denied a penalty, insisting the contact should have resulted in a foul.

Gallagher later explained that VAR’s inaction reflects a broader tendency to avoid overruling on-field calls unless absolutely necessary, suggesting a systemic issue within officiating rather than a single mistake.

Despite the controversy, Xavi Simons impressed, assisting Pedro Porro and scoring what looked like a winning goal, before Brighton equalised late through Georginio Rutter to secure a 2-2 draw.

Simons’ celebration also drew attention after he jumped into the crowd and removed his shirt, though Gallagher defended the decision not to issue a booking, noting referees often avoid stacking punishment for celebration offences.

Bothroyd also argued that sending a player off for such a celebration would be excessive, calling for more common sense in applying the rules.

Meanwhile, the situation continues to escalate off the pitch, with the PFA reportedly reviewing the referee’s performance, which could lead to further consequences for officiating standards.

As the relegation battle heats up, the incident may have wider implications, with Tottenham’s position still under threat and other results potentially pushing them further into danger.
