Andy Robertson’s expected switch to Spurs is in doubt after a major European club swoops in to disrupt the deal.

Andy Robertson faces a major crossroads in the coming days after a top European club made a last-minute move to derail his expected transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Scotland captain, who turns 33 this year and will become a free agent when his Liverpool contract runs out in June, had reportedly shaken hands on a deal to move to Spurs following their dramatic escape from relegation on the final day of the Premier League season.

Tottenham had been in discussions with Robertson as far back as January, with a transfer appearing close to completion at that stage. However, the prospect of a move to North London has been thrown into doubt after Serie A heavyweights Juventus entered the race at the eleventh hour.

According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, talks between Robertson’s camp and Juventus have already taken place to explore the terms on which a deal could be structured, with the Italian club now considering whether to table a formal offer. Sky Italia have also reported that Juve have made direct contact over the left-back’s availability.

Robertson had previously addressed Tottenham’s January approach, confirming that the choice to remain at Anfield had been entirely his own.

“There was interest and discussions were had with both clubs,” he said. “But the decision was that I wanted to stay. I was never not committed. I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half, nine years and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed. This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything.

“January happened, but it is now gone. My focus never came off trying to help the lads on the pitch and in training. Whatever was happening behind the scenes happened, and all I can say is that I kept focusing on football.

“I’ve always had an amazing relationship with Richard Hughes, Mike Gordon, and Michael Edwards. These people brought me to the football club and helped make me who I am. Out of respect to them, the conversations will stay in-house.”

He added that a formal announcement would follow once a decision had been finalised, noting that with just three months remaining on his contract, that moment was drawing closer.

With Juventus now in the picture, Robertson’s next move has become significantly less straightforward than it appeared just weeks ago.
