“First signing: 100% confirmed” – Fabrizio Romano drops transfer update with Liverpool closely linked

Liverpool have officially missed out on signing former target Ederson, with Manchester United completing a deal for the Atalanta midfielder.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that all paperwork has been finalized, with United agreeing a package worth €45 million (£38.8m) for the Brazilian.

Ederson had previously been linked with a move to Anfield and was viewed by some as a potential alternative to Martin Zubimendi. However, that possibility is now over, with Romano stating that the transfer is “100% confirmed.”

Liverpool are still expected to strengthen their midfield before the window closes, although their plans could depend on the futures of key players such as Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones, who has been linked with Inter Milan.

While Ederson is highly regarded for his ability to carry and progress the ball, there have been questions about whether his style would suit the intensity and physical demands expected in Liverpool’s midfield. Although he keeps possession well and rarely takes unnecessary risks, concerns remain over his effectiveness under pressure and his overall defensive impact.

Many believe Liverpool need a midfielder who offers greater energy, aggression, and defensive presence—qualities that have been lacking at times during the 2025/26 campaign. With creative players such as Florian Wirtz expected to take on greater attacking responsibility, the Reds may instead prioritise a more industrious and defensively reliable option.

As a result, while losing a long-term transfer target to a fierce rival is rarely ideal, this is one move Liverpool supporters may be able to accept without too much disappointment.
