Christian Eriksen endured another alarming medical episode during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, painfully echoing the cardiac arrest that nearly claimed his life five years ago.
The incident struck in the 65th minute when Eriksen clutched his chest and collapsed to the ground. Medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch as teammates immediately formed a protective barrier around him. With Denmark leading 2-1, officials had no choice but to abandon the match.
Reassuring Early Signs
The initial news, however, was encouraging. The Danish Football Federation confirmed that Eriksen regained consciousness quickly and was able to walk to the waiting ambulance before being taken to hospital for further checks.
Team doctor Morten Boesen provided a measured but positive update, noting that Eriksen was doing well, that his pacemaker appeared to have functioned as designed, and that further tests would be carried out to establish the cause of the episode.

Well-wishes flooded in from across the football world. Manchester United — where Eriksen won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup — released a statement backing his recovery, while former clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan also voiced their support alongside fans and organisations worldwide.
A Familiar Fear
Eriksen first faced this battle in public during Euro 2020, when he suffered a cardiac arrest mid-match against Finland. He was subsequently fitted with an ICD device to regulate his heart and, defying all expectations, fought his way back to the top level of the game.
This latest scare will inevitably reignite concerns about his long-term wellbeing — but for now, the focus remains firmly on hisrecovery.
