Tottenham Hotspur have completed their first major signing of the summer transfer window, securing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported £52 million.
The Dutch defender had been a long-term target for Spurs and joins fellow summer arrivals Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson — both free transfers — in what is shaping up to be a significant defensive rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.
Van Hecke Speaks
Speaking for the first time as a Spurs player after completing his medical and putting pen to paper, van Hecke made no attempt to hide his excitement.
“It’s a huge honour to become a Spurs player. Joining a club of this size is a dream come true,” he said.
“I already have a strong relationship with the head coach and I’m really looking forward to working with him again. Micky has also spoken very highly about the club, so I can’t wait to get started.
“I’ve played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as an opponent — now I’m excited to walk out there as a Spurs player in front of the fans. That will be a special moment.”
What Van Hecke Brings
The centre-back arrives with 106 Premier League appearances to his name, contributing four goals and four assists since his top-flight debut in 2022. Crucially, he is no stranger to De Zerbi’s system, having featured prominently in the Italian’s second season at Brighton — a side that conceded just 46 goals last term, the third-best defensive record in the league.
By comparison, Spurs shipped 57 goals in the same campaign. Van Hecke’s arrival signals a clear intent to fix that — and quickly.
