SPURS’ MIDFIELD MAKEOVER PICKS UP PACE AS DE ZERBI HUNTS TONALI, FERNANDES AND KONÉ

Tottenham are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market as Roberto De Zerbi pushes ahead with his ambitious rebuild at the club. Having already addressed the defence, Spurs have now shifted their focus firmly towards the midfield — an area the Italian coach reportedly views as needing a complete transformation if the club are to compete at a higher level next season.

Sandro Tonali remains the headline target. The Newcastle midfielder is considered a perfect fit for De Zerbi’s system, offering passing range, tactical intelligence, defensive discipline and leadership — exactly the profile Spurs are looking for. Talks are said to be progressing, with Tonali himself understood to be open to the move. However, any deal will not come cheap, with Newcastle under no pressure to sell and expected to demand a hefty fee.

Alongside Tonali, Tottenham are pushing ahead with interest in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder’s technical ability, energy and creativity make him another ideal candidate for De Zerbi’s style, and Spurs are said to be optimistic about agreeing personal terms with the player.

Tottenham have now reportedly opened talks over a third midfield target in France international Manu Koné, with a potential £40 million offer being considered. At 23, Koné brings physicality, ball-carrying ability and defensive quality, and could represent better value compared to the other targets — potentially allowing Spurs to strengthen multiple positions while keeping their finances in check.

The ambitious midfield plans could, however, create complications within the existing squad. Lucas Bergvall, who arrived with considerable expectations and has been regarded as one of the club’s brightest young talents, could find his pathway to regular football blocked if all three targets arrive. Reports suggest the Swedish midfielder may weigh up his options should first-team opportunities become limited, with a loan move among the possibilities being considered.

Regardless of how individual situations play out, the direction of travel under De Zerbi is becoming increasingly clear. The Italian is building a Tottenham squad that looks markedly different from anything seen in recent seasons — with technical quality, tactical versatility and mental resilience at the core of his vision.

This summer is shaping up to be one of the most transformative windows in the club’s recent history. The challenge now is turning ambition into reality.
