Tottenham Hotspur are set to confirm the most expensive signing in their history, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reporting that all paperwork on the deal has now been signed off by both parties.
Spurs have splashed out more than £200 million this summer as they look to rebuild following a rocky Premier League campaign that saw them scrape clear of relegation. The rebuild has been backed heavily by the club’s board, who continue to show faith in Roberto De Zerbi’s vision, with the manager already bringing in the likes of Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.
Now, according to Romano, Tottenham have agreed a deal with Newcastle United to sign Sandro Tonali in what will become the club’s new record transfer. The deal is valued at around £100 million with add-ons, with a guaranteed fee close to £92 million already agreed. Romano says both sides have now signed every document needed, with only the formal unveiling left before Tonali is presented as a Spurs player.
It’s a huge windfall for Newcastle, who picked up Tonali from AC Milan back in 2023 for roughly £55 million, meaning the Magpies stand to nearly double their money after just two years with him at St James’ Park.
De Zerbi is understood to have played a key role in getting the deal over the line, with his personal connection to Tonali proving decisive. The pair both hail from the Brescia area of Italy, and Tonali previously opened up on Sky Italy about how much of an impact De Zerbi’s approach had on him, saying the manager came to him not just as someone from his hometown but with a genuine footballing project and full belief in what he’s building at Spurs.
Tonali built a strong reputation during his time on Tyneside. Eddie Howe once hailed his early performances as “magnificent,” pointing to his sharp positioning, eye for goal, and the ease with which he slotted into a productive midfield partnership in the Premier League. Jamie Carragher has also been full of praise for the Italian, previously suggesting he had the physicality and technical ability to have been a real game-changer for Liverpool’s midfield.
Spurs fans now just await the official confirmation, with Tonali’s move set to shatter the club’s transfer record and send a strong statement of intent as De Zerbi looks to push Tottenham back among the Premier League’s top sides.
