Liverpool fans remain uncertain over Cody Gakpo’s future, with contradictory reports continuing to emerge about the winger’s situation.
Reports from the Netherlands suggest the 27-year-old could be open to a move to Tottenham, who are reportedly showing strong interest. TEAMtalk has also claimed that Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola could approve Gakpo’s departure if the Reds manage to sign a suitable replacement before the transfer deadline.
Liverpool are believed to be pursuing PSG winger Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, meaning there could potentially be major changes to the club’s attacking options before the window closes.
Conflicting reports on Gakpo
On Tuesday, Alex Crook told talkSPORT that Liverpool are unlikely to allow Gakpo to join Tottenham.
According to Crook, Liverpool sources believe Gakpo has enjoyed an impressive pre-season under Iraola and that the manager sees him as someone capable of reaching another level at Anfield.
While the Dutchman may be open to a move, Crook suggested that a transfer to Spurs is currently unlikely before deadline day.
However, Fabrizio Romano has offered a different perspective, insisting that Tottenham’s pursuit of Gakpo remains alive.
Romano stated that negotiations between Spurs and Liverpool are still continuing despite recent reports suggesting the deal had collapsed. Gakpo is reportedly open to joining Tottenham, with personal terms not considered an issue.
The major stumbling block appears to be reaching a financial agreement between the clubs.
Romano also explained that if Gakpo does move to Tottenham, Liverpool would then look to bring in two wingers, with Barcola among their leading targets.
Gakpo’s future remains unclear
At this stage, it is difficult to predict whether Gakpo will swap Merseyside for North London before the transfer window shuts.
Much could depend on Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola and Mbaye. It would be difficult to imagine the Reds approving Gakpo’s departure without securing a major attacking replacement first.
Should Liverpool land Barcola, the door could potentially open for Gakpo to join Tottenham. Even then, though, Liverpool are unlikely to consider selling him for anything below his perceived market value.
Gakpo struggled for consistency last season but has looked far sharper during the summer. He impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup and has also performed well during Liverpool’s pre-season fixtures, including scoring and assisting against Como.
With deadline day approaching, the uncertainty surrounding Gakpo continues. For now, Liverpool supporters are left waiting to discover whether the Dutchman will still be wearing the famous red shirt when the transfer window finally closes.
