Liverpool supporters remain in the dark over Cody Gakpo’s future, with mixed signals surfacing about the winger’s next move over the past day.
Dutch outlets have suggested the 27-year-old would be receptive to a switch to Tottenham amid firm interest from Spurs, and TEAMtalk understands Andoni Iraola could sanction his exit provided the Reds land a replacement before the deadline.
With speculation swirling around the club’s number 18, Liverpool are also being heavily tipped to launch a twin move for Paris Saint-Germain pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye — meaning Anfield’s attacking lineup could look markedly different by the time the window shuts.
Mixed messages surround Gakpo’s situation
Alex Crook told talkSPORT on Tuesday that he doesn’t expect Liverpool to green-light a Spurs move for Gakpo, noting that sources at the club feel he’s impressed during pre-season under Iraola and that the manager sees him as a player capable of thriving under his system. Crook added that while Gakpo himself would likely welcome the switch, he doesn’t currently see the deal happening before deadline day.
Fabrizio Romano, however, painted a different picture on his YouTube channel, insisting the move to Spurs is far from dead. He said talks between the two clubs are ongoing despite recent rumours suggesting otherwise, and that personal terms for Gakpo aren’t an obstacle — the player remains open to the switch. Romano added that a financial agreement between the clubs still needs to be reached, and pointed out that if Gakpo does depart, Liverpool would move to sign two wingers: primary target Barcola plus another addition. According to Romano, nothing has changed and the conversations are continuing.
The uncertainty continues
At this stage, it’s genuinely unclear whether the Dutchman will make the switch from Merseyside to north London before the window closes in under two weeks — and his eventual fate may hinge heavily on how Liverpool’s chase for Barcola and Mbaye plays out.
It seems unlikely Liverpool’s hierarchy would sign off on losing Gakpo unless they’ve already secured the PSG winger, and that’s no certainty given it could require a fee approaching the £125m club-record they paid for Alexander Isak last year.
Should the Reds land Barcola, that could pave the way for Gakpo’s departure to Spurs — though even then, the ownership would likely be reluctant to sell below his genuine market value.
The 27-year-old underperformed relative to his usual level last season but has looked sharper this summer, shining for the Netherlands at the World Cup and contributing during pre-season friendlies against Monaco and Como, where he scored and set up a goal in the latter.
It speaks volumes about Gakpo’s resilience that he’s delivered such strong performances just weeks after the devastating loss of his unborn son in June.
With the deadline drawing nearer, there’s still no clear indication of whether the Dutchman will remain on Liverpool’s books when the window finally shuts.
