Tottenham Handed Fresh Chance to Sign Jean-Philippe Mateta Alongside Omar Marmoush
Tottenham Hotspur could have a fresh opportunity to strengthen their attack after new developments surrounding Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Spurs have previously shown interest in the French forward and have reportedly made enquiries about his availability. With Roberto De Zerbi keen to add more attacking firepower, Mateta could once again become a realistic target.
The 29-year-old started Palace’s opening Premier League match against Everton, but the game ended in disappointment as Palace suffered defeat and Mateta failed to make a major impact.
Despite that slow start, his record last season showed his ability to deliver in the Premier League. Mateta scored 12 goals in 32 league appearances during the 2025/26 campaign and offers a physical presence, strong aerial ability and a willingness to attack crosses.
Tottenham Want More Attacking Options
Spurs are already pursuing Manchester City attackers Omar Marmoush and Savinho, but their search for attacking reinforcements may not stop there.
Tottenham’s defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend highlighted some issues in their attack, increasing the need for greater depth and another proven goalscorer.
Mateta could offer something different from their other targets. While Marmoush can play across several attacking positions, the Palace striker provides a more traditional centre-forward option capable of holding up the ball, battling defenders and creating opportunities from crosses.
Mateta’s Palace Contract Dispute Could Change Everything
The situation has become even more interesting following reports that Mateta has challenged the validity of the final 10 months of his contract at Palace.
The striker has reportedly taken the matter to FIFA, arguing that the final year of his agreement should not be considered valid.
If the dispute causes tensions between Mateta and Palace to escalate, the club could potentially become more open to allowing him to leave.
That would immediately put Tottenham on alert given their previous interest.
Marmoush May Not Be Enough for Spurs
Tottenham’s pursuit of Marmoush remains a major part of their summer plans, but the Egyptian is unlikely to solve every problem in De Zerbi’s attack.
His versatility is a major advantage, although Spurs could still benefit from having a traditional No. 9 alongside him.
Richarlison’s future is also uncertain, and should the Brazilian leave, Tottenham could need multiple attacking additions to maintain enough depth throughout the season.
Could Mateta Be the Missing Piece?
Mateta would bring a completely different dimension to Tottenham’s attack.
His strength, aerial ability and physicality could provide Spurs with an alternative approach against teams that sit deep, while his presence could complement more mobile attackers such as Marmoush and Savinho.
Nothing is guaranteed yet, but with Mateta’s contract situation developing and Tottenham actively searching for attacking reinforcements, the door could be opening for Spurs to make another move.
If Palace become willing to negotiate, Tottenham could have a genuine opportunity to bring an experienced Premier League striker to North London before the transfer window closes.
