Tottenham didn’t have to wait long to learn whether a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka would materialise during this transfer window.
Spurs were linked with the German international earlier in the week after reports suggested he was close to making a decision on his future at Bayern. With his contract at the Allianz Arena set to expire in the summer, Goretzka had attracted interest from several clubs, including Atletico Madrid.
However, clarity arrived on Friday regarding his situation. After seven years at Bayern — a spell that has brought him six Bundesliga titles and a Champions League triumph in 2020 — Goretzka has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season.
That decision rules out any January move, meaning Tottenham will not secure a midfield reinforcement before Monday night’s deadline.
“As honoured as I am by interest from top international clubs, I’ve clearly decided that I want to remain at FC Bayern until the end of the season,” the 30-year-old wrote on Instagram.
Goretzka is now expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents in the summer, though it remains uncertain whether Spurs will enter the race.
It’s easy to understand why clubs like Tottenham and Atletico are keen. According to Sofascore, Goretzka averages 2.5 ball recoveries per game this season, boasts an impressive 92% pass completion rate, and wins around half of his duels — all key traits for controlling the midfield.
Despite being used more as a rotation option under Vincent Kompany, he has still featured 28 times across all competitions, starting 16 matches, underlining his ongoing importance to Bayern.
While Tottenham possess midfielders with similar profiles, none currently match Goretzka’s all-round impact. If a summer move becomes possible, it’s a deal the Lilywhites should seriously consider.
