Pape Matar Sarr’s Tottenham future has taken another unexpected twist, with both Galatasaray and Monaco stepping up their efforts to sign the Senegalese midfielder.
Reports on August 20 claimed Sarr had agreed personal terms with Galatasaray on a contract worth around €9 million annually. Tottenham rejected an initial €18 million bid and are believed to be demanding €25 million for the 23-year-old.
Galatasaray later raised their offer to €20 million, with talks reportedly entering their final stages.
But the Turkish club’s delay has given Monaco an opportunity to make a late push. Senegalese outlet Taggat reports that the Ligue 1 side are now close to agreeing a season-long loan for Sarr, with no purchase option currently included.
Monaco manager Filipe Luís is reportedly a major admirer of Sarr and has already held talks with the midfielder. Sarr is said to prefer a move to Monaco over Galatasaray.
The biggest stumbling block remains Tottenham’s decision. While Sarr has reportedly reached agreements with both interested clubs, neither side has secured Spurs’ approval.
Tottenham are unlikely to be enthusiastic about a loan, particularly when a permanent transfer could provide Roberto De Zerbi’s team with a significant financial boost. Sarr’s contract runs until 2030, while Transfermarkt currently values him at around €30 million.
The Senegal international made 37 appearances for Spurs last season, accumulating 2,212 minutes of playing time.
