Tottenham supporters were left furious with Cristian Romero after a reckless challenge on Casemiro earned him a straight red card early in Spurs’ 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Romero has been one of Tottenham’s standout figures in recent seasons and was handed the captain’s armband by Thomas Frank ahead of the campaign. However, his leadership has failed to spark progress, with Spurs sitting 14th in the Premier League going into the Old Trafford clash.
The Argentine defender had also criticised the club’s board days before the match, questioning their lack of activity during the January transfer window in an Instagram post. Fans were hoping for a strong response on the pitch, but instead Romero let the team down by being dismissed before the half-hour mark.
Spurs actually started brightly, with Conor Gallagher forcing a save from Senne Lammens in the 12th minute, while Pape Sarr and João Palhinha both threatened from distance. That early momentum was wiped out in the 29th minute when Romero lunged into Casemiro with studs showing, prompting referee Michael Oliver to show a red card. Replays confirmed the decision, marking Romero’s fourth Premier League dismissal for Spurs — a club record he now shares with Younes Kaboul.
Manchester United took full advantage, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes scoring in either half to seal a comfortable 2-0 win. The sending-off means Romero will miss Tottenham’s next four matches against Newcastle, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace — his second suspension of the season.
The incident has reignited frustration among Spurs fans, many of whom are now questioning Romero’s future at the club. Although he signed a new four-year deal last summer to end exit speculation, links to Atletico Madrid have resurfaced, and some supporters would not oppose a summer departure.
Reacting on X, one fan wrote:
“As much as we agree with Romero’s frustration over injuries and lack of investment, fans won’t accept the captain getting sent off or suspended multiple times every season. Four games without him at the most important stage of our campaign. Unforgiv“Unacceptable” – Tottenham supporters slam ‘absolute clown’ over his actions against Man Unitedable.”
