Tottenham have been dealt a significant setback in their search for a new manager, with reports suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino is close to agreeing a deal to take charge of Real Madrid.
Spurs announced on Friday that former Juventus boss Igor Tudor will serve as interim head coach following Thomas Frank’s dismissal earlier in the week. Frank’s exit came after a 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle, a result that ultimately convinced the club’s leadership to make a change. A permanent successor is expected to be appointed in the summer.
Any hopes of reuniting with Pochettino now appear to be diminishing. According to Spanish publication Defensa Central, the Argentine has reached an agreement in principle to replace Alvaro Arbeloa at Real Madrid, provided the club backs him with three key signings.
The former Tottenham manager is reportedly willing to take on the role if Real Madrid secure two centre-backs and a midfielder to reinforce the squad for the long term. These requests are said to align with the Spanish club’s own transfer strategy, as they believe certain areas still need strengthening despite confidence in the current team.
That said, Pochettino is considered an outside contender for the job next year, with Real Madrid continuing to explore multiple managerial options and gauge interest from various candidates.
He is not expected to accept any club role before the World Cup, as he remains committed to leading the United States national team on home soil.
In the meantime, Tudor has spoken of his pride at stepping into the role at Tottenham. In an interview with the club’s official website, he described it as an honour to join during a crucial period, stressing his determination to deliver consistency, organise the squad effectively and improve results swiftly.
Sporting director Johan Lange also voiced confidence in Tudor, highlighting his experience in handling demanding situations and his ability to make an immediate impact. The club’s short-term aim, he explained, is to steady performances, make the most of the squad’s talent and compete strongly in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
