David Ornstein of The Athletic has downplayed mounting speculation that Liverpool are preparing to replace Arne Slot with Xabi Alonso, confirming that the club remains fully committed to the Dutch manager. Despite a disappointing Premier League campaign that has seen the Reds suffer 10 league defeats this season, the message from Anfield is one of continuity rather than impulsive change.
Recent reports from BILD suggested that Michael Edwards has been in contact with Alonso, fueling rumors of a potential managerial switch next season. Ornstein, however, clarified that the “noise” about replacing Slot does not reflect the club’s actual stance.
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast (via AnythingLFC_), Ornstein confirmed that Liverpool are planning their future with Slot in charge. Internally, there are no plans to dismiss him, even as pressure mounts following another recent league defeat. He said:
“All our information, despite reports to the contrary, is that Liverpool are sticking with Arne Slot. There’s no thought to changing coach. They are planning with him, and their priority is to give him the profile of squad to succeed.”
While the club publicly backs Slot, the pressure is set to intensify as the 2025/26 season nears its conclusion. Liverpool are currently fifth in the league, trailing Aston Villa for the final guaranteed Champions League spot. Failing to secure a place in Europe’s top competition could make Slot’s future increasingly precarious.
With Xabi Alonso reportedly eager for a return to management and keen to influence squad decisions, speculation around a potential Anfield comeback will persist until Slot can deliver consistent results on the pitch.
