VAR Fury at Tottenham Hotspur as Controversial No-Call Sparks Chaos in 2-2 Draw with Brighton & Hove Albion

Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion will be remembered as much for controversy as for drama, with a key officiating decision leaving players, coaches, and fans furious at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While Georginio Rutter’s late equaliser grabbed headlines, it was Kaoru Mitoma’s earlier goal that sparked outrage. The strike itself—a superbly taken volley—was impressive, but the build-up is what drew heavy criticism after Xavi Simons appeared to be fouled in midfield moments before the move developed.

Despite immediate appeals from Spurs players, the referee allowed play to continue, and VAR declined to step in. Within seconds, Yankuba Minteh delivered a cross that Mitoma converted at the back post to level the score.

From Tottenham’s perspective, the frustration lies less with the finish and more with the failure to review the incident. VAR rules permit checks on attacking phases leading directly to goals, particularly when a potential foul occurs in the same sequence. Many felt that threshold was clearly met.

Simons, a key figure in Spurs’ attack, seemed to be impeded while trying to break forward, yet officials allowed Brighton to regain possession and launch the move that led to the goal. Given the club’s precarious position near the relegation zone, the lack of intervention has been widely criticised as another example of inconsistency in VAR decisions.

The timing of the equaliser made matters worse. Tottenham had gone ahead through Pedro Porro and were gaining control before the break, only for the controversial goal to swing momentum back in Brighton’s favour.

Instead of heading into half-time with the advantage, Spurs were pegged back, allowing the visitors to grow into the game. The psychological impact showed, with Tottenham later relying on individual brilliance just to edge back in front.

The incident once again puts VAR under scrutiny in the Premier League, as debates continue over its consistency despite its purpose to eliminate clear errors.

For Roberto De Zerbi and his side, the frustration is compounded by the final result. Dropping points late is damaging enough, but the feeling that a crucial decision went against them only adds to the sense of injustice.

With Tottenham still winless in 2026 and stuck in the relegation zone, every moment is magnified. Had the foul on Simons been given—or even reviewed—the sequence leading to Mitoma’s goal might never have happened.

In a season defined by fine margins, this wasn’t just another refereeing controversy—it could prove pivotal in Tottenham’s battle to stay in the Premier League.
