Tottenham’s squad has changed dramatically, with many familiar faces gone over the past two years. The club has had four head coaches in little more than a year, and 29 players from in and around the first team have left. Ben Davies, who signed his first contract more than 12 years ago, is now the longest-serving player and the only one left from the 2019 Champions League final. This list covers only permanent exits, so players who left on loan with obligations to buy are excluded.
This summer’s departures have been a mixed bag. Cristian Romero finally joined Atletico Madrid for about £34.2million after years of links and has started their last four games, including a heated moment with Jude Bellingham in the Madrid derby. Djed Spence got the first-choice right-back role he wanted at Inter for £30million, but reported physical problems have delayed his debut, which could come on October 10 against Parma. Luka Vuskovic, sold to Brighton for £50million, has started all eight games, scored once and helped his side keep clean sheets, earning praise after the 3-0 win over Arsenal. Spurs keep a 20 per cent sell-on clause and matching rights. Will Lankshear has scored six goals in eight Championship games for Middlesbrough (£10million plus add-ons) and also scored on his England U21 debut, and Spurs hold the same protections. Ashley Phillips, who also went to Boro for £7million plus add-ons after never playing a competitive game for Spurs, has made seven appearances and scored against Norwich.

In midfield and attack, Yves Bissouma left after four years and 111 games and has signed a one-year deal with Ajax. Joao Palhinha, who scored seven goals on loan, was surplus to requirements after the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, so he moved to Benfica for around £16million. Randal Kolo Muani, who managed one Premier League goal in 30 appearances, has joined Juventus and is goalless in five Serie A games. Manor Solomon, after just six Spurs appearances and loans at three clubs, moved to West Ham for up to £7million and has 10 appearances with four goal involvements in eight games. Alfie Devine became a permanent Preston player after the club triggered a £6million option, and Dane Scarlett, with 27 Spurs appearances, has joined League One’s Leyton Orient and made four appearances so far.
Brennan Johnson, the scorer of the Europa League final winner, was told he didn’t fit Thomas Frank’s plans and joined Crystal Palace for £35million in January, where he scored none in 26 games. He has since gone to Everton in a swap for Dwight McNeil and has a goal and an assist in the Carabao Cup, though he is still waiting for a Premier League goal. Son Heung-min left as a club legend after 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 games, having captained the side to European glory. He joined LAFC for an MLS record fee of over £20million and has 20 goals and 23 assists in 49 games. Bryan Gil made only 43 appearances in four years before joining Girona for about £8.7million in 2025, and after their relegation he has made five appearances in La Liga 2 with no goal involvements.
Fellow Spaniard Sergio Reguilon left at the end of his contract after 73 appearances and is now playing alongside Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, with one goal in 18 games. Timo Werner, who was heavily criticised across his two loan spells and 41 games, is at San Jose Earthquakes, where he has six goals and five assists in 15 games. Fraser Forster, 37, made 34 appearances in three seasons, won a Europa League medal, and now plays for Bournemouth on a new one-year deal. Alfie Whiteman, a long-serving academy product, retired from football to work in photography and directing, and has also taken acting lessons.
Among the earlier departures, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg left after 184 games and spent last season at Marseille, where he captained the side, and he has played every minute this term. Tanguy Ndombele, signed for a club-record fee of over £60million in 2019, is remembered as Spurs’ biggest flop. He played only 91 games, then had his contract terminated in 2024 and struggled with injuries at Nice. He is now a free agent, with some talk linking him to Marseille. Giovani Lo Celso, another expensive 2019 signing, played 108 games for Spurs, and his injury problems have continued at Real Betis, where he has made just one appearance this season. Emerson Royal struggled at AC Milan, though he won the Italian Super Cup, and he is now in and out of the Flamengo side with 49 appearances in all.
Some exits have been clear successes. Troy Parrott has thrived after leaving, scoring a late winner for Betis against Real Madrid and another on his Champions League debut, and his sell-on clause earned Spurs around 4million euros. Ryan Sessegnon has rebuilt his career at Fulham, playing 31 times last season and now featuring under new boss Alvaro Arbeloa, and his departure meant all of the 2019 summer signings, including Ndombele, Lo Celso and Jack Clarke, eventually went back to their previous clubs. Joe Rodon helped Leeds win the Championship title before impressing in the Premier League, playing 139 games for them, though a hamstring injury last month halted his regular starts under Daniel Farke.
Others have found stability. Oliver Skipp, who left after 18 years at Spurs, suffered two relegations with Leicester and has now joined Charlton on a season-long loan, in a deal that could eventually bring Spurs more than £20million plus a sell-on clause. Japhet Tanganga has left his injury troubles behind, now captains Sheffield United and has played nearly every minute, scoring against Bolton this month. Ivan Perisic, after his torn cruciate and a mutual termination with Hajduk Split, has been prolific at PSV Eindhoven with 28 goals and 28 assists in 87 games. Eric Dier left Bayern Munich as a title winner, signed a three-year deal at Monaco, and has played every minute this season while developing as a coach in their academy.
